Mumbai: Crude oil has become cheaper than water in India.

You heard it Right.

After a 30 per cent drop in the international market, crude oil prices in the domestic futures market at 2 pm on Monday came down to Rs 2,500 per barrel.

One barrel contains 159 litres of crude oil.

This way, the price of one litre crude oil will be about Rs 15-16 where as one litre of packaged drinking water is Rs 20.

In other words, one litre of crude oil is four rupees cheaper than one litre of packaged drinking water.

However, in the retail fuel market the scenario is different.

One litre of petrol costs around Rs 75 due to high taxes imposed by the central and state governments.

As per an estimate taxes make up around half of petrol and diesel prices in the retail fuel market.

Time and again, experts demand petroleum products should be brought under goods and services tax (GST) regime to ensure uniformity and low prices to consumers.
