New Delhi:The government has no plan to reduce GST rate applicable on branded pulses in the country, said Anurag Thakur, Minister of State for Finance.

In response to a question in the Lok Sabha, he said at present GST at the rate of 5 per cent is leviable on packaged branded pulses where the brand owner retains enforceable rights on such brands.

However, this five per cent GST is not applicable on unbranded pulses that are being sold and purchased in the retail or wholesale market.

“Other pulses are exempt from GST,” said the minister.

The government collected Rs 320 crore GST from the sale of branded pulses in the country, said Anurag Thakur.

In response to a question by Shardaben Patel, his party colleague and Lok Sabha member from Mehsana in Gujarat, he said the 5% GST rate on the sale of branded pulses was decided by the GST council.

GST Council is the apex body, comprising both the states and the Centre , to administer a common nationwide goods and services tax – GST – in the country.

The minister also clarified that there was no proposal before the GST Council to bring down the GST on branded pulses from 5% to 1%.
