New Delhi: Applauding Modi government's decision to increase tariffs on U.S. commodities being exported to India, former diplomat Anil Trigunayat claimed that Trump administration needs to realise that India has the biggest market in the world and they can't ignore it.

Talking exclusively to ETV Bharat about Modi government's move, the former ambassador said, 'it is absolutely a correct approach. We are driven by our national interest. By taking these steps they want to put break on India's development.'

Discarding Trump administration's high-handed approach, Anil Trigunayat claimed that U.S administration's first policy shouldn't be in conflict with their strategic partners.

He said, 'India is not a banana republic. We are a country which has its own strategic autonomy. Even today, if there is no other power which can balance out the Americans, India along with many other countries can provide the market.'

Calling U.S's decision to strip New Delhi of preferential access to their market wrong, the former diplomat claimed that Trump administration wants to serve their own interest at the expense of global trade which is not a good thing.
