As per the food order delivery platform, Swiggy-India ordered an average of 95 Biriyanis per minute or 1.6 Biriyanis every second through January to November 2019 on the platform.

New Delhi: As the year 2019 draws to an end, we looked back at the food trends that ruled the year 2019. And it was Biriyani! Yes, as per the food order delivery platform Swiggy-India ordered an average of 95 Biriyanis per minute or 1.6 Biriyanis every second through January to November 2019 on the platform.

The most popular ones were Boneless Chicken Biriyanis, Chicken Dum Biriyanis, Mutton Biriyanis, Egg Biriyanis, Veg Biriyanis, and Paneer Biriyanis.

Thrissur in Kerala, famous for its Biriyanis combos, noticed a special addition this year. ‘Freedom Food Combo’ prepared by jail inmates, witnessed over 2, 000 orders within a short time of its launch, said Swiggy.

The food delivery platform further said it registered a 128 per cent hike on Khichdi orders during that period, especially during the festive month of Navaratri.

Top picks of 2019

India’s love for Chicken Biriyani is not new and it proved this time too! Chicken Biriyani, Masala Dosa, Paneer Butter Masala, Chicken Fried Rice and Mutton Biriyani were the top five picks of the year. Besides, Veg Fried Rice, Veg Biriyani, Tandoori Chicken and Dal Makhani were a few dishes Indians relished this year.

Healthy food getting more takers

Moreover, there was a significant 306 per cent increase in Keto specific items ordered in 2019. Dishes like Keto brownies, Keto-friendly Tuscan Chicken and Healthy Red Rice Poha were some of the most ordered dishes in the healthy category of the platform.

Keto Brownies were the most indulged sweet treat by fitness enthusiasts. It was observed that there was 249 per cent increase in healthy food orders including Keto.

What’s your topping on the pizza?

While there is a growing popularity to experiment with new dishes in India, Indians were stuck to their vegetarian toppings for Pizzas. Cheese, onion, paneer, extra cheese, mushroom, capsicum, corn, jalapenos and olives were among the most common toppings on pizza orders.

Pineapple was the least preferred topping as was preferred by only 1.5 per cent of pizzas ordered during the period on the platform.

Indians have a sweet tooth

In the sweet course category, Gulab Jamun and Moong Dal Halwa remained the favorite dishes on the platform while another sweet favourite entered the segment as well.

Besides 17,69,399 Gulab Jamun and 2,00,301 orders for Halwa in 2019, Falooda was the newest entry to the top desserts with 11,94,732 orders this year. Also, consumers ordered over 3 lakh cakes on the platform to celebrate occasions with loved ones–the Black Forest being the most preferred one.
