New Delhi:The Central Board of Direct Taxes Wednesday extended the date for filing revised and belated income tax returns for FY 2018-19 (AY-2019-20) by two more months.

The CBDT’s order was issued on Wednesday (September 30, 2020), the last day for filing the revised and belated ITRs for AY 2019-20 as per the earlier order.

“On further consideration of genuine difficulties being faced by taxpayers due to the Covid-19 situation, CBDT further extends the due date for furnishing of belated & revised ITRs for Assessment Year 2019-20 from September 30, 2020 to November 30, 2020,” CBDT said in a tweet.

This is the fourth extension in the deadline for filing the revised and belated ITR for AY 2019-20.

The last date for filing such returns is March 31 of the assessment year. However, in view of the difficulties faced by the taxpayers due to Covid-19 global pandemic, the CBDT extended the date from March 31 to June 30, which was again extended to July 31.

However, the CBDT decided to extend the date from July 31 to September 30 as the global pandemic showed no sign of abating.

The highly contagious SARS-CoV-2 virus has killed over 97,000 people in the country and over one million people worldwide in less than 10 months after it was first detected in Wuhan region of China late last year.

The Centre brought an ordinance, the Taxation and Other Laws (Relaxation of Certain Provisions) Ordinance on March 31, 2020 to relax the due date for filing the return.

“In exercise of powers conferred under section 119(2)a of the Act, the CBDT, hereby further extends the date for furnishing of belated and revised returns for the assessment year 2019-20 under sub-section (4) and (5) of section 139 of the Act respectively, from September 30, 2020 to November 30, 2020,” Rajarajeswari R, an under-secretary in the department of revenue, ministry of finance, said in the order.

“Order u/s 119(2a) has been issued,” said the CBDT.
