Undeveloped fetus found in stomach of a one-month-old baby

A one-month old baby girl was born with a swollen stomach. An approximately 8 cm undeveloped embryo-like tumor was found inside her stomach when operated.

Jhansi: A one-month-old baby girl was recently operated at a private hospital of Jhansi for developing a unique tumour inside her stomach.

An approximately 8 cm undeveloped embryo-like tumour was found inside her stomach when operated. An undeveloped face, head and hair were clearly visible.

According to the surgeon, the stomach of the baby was swollen since birth. After a consultation, a CT scan was done. The CT scan report showed a 10 cm long abnormal tissue inside her stomach. Inside this pouch, approximately 8 cm undeveloped embryo-like tumour was found.

Dr. Arun Gupta, who treated the baby, said that such developments are termed fetus-in-fetu. This tumor occurs in one newborn from 5 million to 10 million newborns.

At present, the baby is healthy after the operation. In the next few days, she will be discharged from the hospital.
