Violence against medicos: Docs asks Health Ministry to act within 24 hrs

A 10-member doctors delegation of Resident Doctors Association from Delhi has demanded the intervention of the Union Health Minister to stop violence against doctors. Protests have erupted after a junior doctor was allegedly beaten up by the kin of a 75-year-old patient who died in West Bengal's NRS Hospital late on Monday night.

New Delhi: Giving an ultimatum of 24 hours, a 10-member doctors delegation of Resident Doctors Association from Delhi called on Union Health Minister Dr Harsh Vardhan and demanded his intervention to stop violence against doctors.

The doctors' delegation said that if the government did not take any action against the culprits who attacked doctors in West Bengal in the next 24 hours, doctors across India will go for an indefinite strike.

Dr Prakash Thakur, president of Resident Doctors Association from Safdarjang Hospital, said that the minister has assured the delegation of taking appropriate action in the matter.

"The Hon'ble Minister has assured us that he will talk to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and Union Home Minister Amit Shah in this regard," said Dr Thakur.

He said that the ongoing violence against doctors in West Bengal was worrisome.

Dr Thakur also said that the protest is a token strike and the emergency services are on.

"I appeal to the doctors to observe restraint so that essential services to the people are not disrupted," said Dr Harsh Vardhan in a statement.

Protests have erupted across West Bengal and few other districts of the country after a junior doctor was allegedly beaten up by the kin of a 75-year-old patient who died in West Bengal's NRS Hospital late on Monday night.

The intern sustained a serious skull injury in the attack and was admitted in the intensive care unit of the Institute of Neurosciences.
