Chandigarh: Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi and many veteran Congress leaders Tuesday staged a protest at Gandhi Bhawan in the Punjab University campus, Chandigarh.
Finance Minister Manpreet Singh Badal, while talking to media, said that they took a pledge that the Punjab Congress would throw out the BJP firstly in the state elections and then from the national scenario. This statement was made after the video of the Lakhimpur Kheri incident went viral.
Channi, who also addressed to media, said that the detention of Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi was highly reprehensible. She had been charged under various other sections besides disturbing the peace.
Regarding the video of the Lakhimpur Kheri incident. Channi said that the peaceful protesting farmers were deliberately hit by a vehicle which is unfortunate. He also referred to a statement of a BJP leader who was clearly threatening the farmers.

Linking the Lakhimpur Kheri incident to the Jallianwala Bagh massacre, Channi said the incident was a reminder of the time when General Dyer fired on unarmed people. He said that such actions by the ruling dispensation would not work in this country. He said that today the blood of all the people from across the country is heating up. He along with his counterparts sat on the feet of Mahatma Gandhi to derive strength and work in a peaceful manner.
The Chief Minister said the Centre should not to force the youth of the country to look to Shaheed Bhagat Singh, Rajguru, and Sukhdev for a strong cause of democracy in the country. At the same time, he said that the need of the hour is to recognise the voice of the people.
"Today's farmer is upset. The country's farmer is dying. Realising this, the three agricultural bills should be withdrawn," Channi told the media.
Addressing Prime Minister Narendra Modi, he said that he should stop BJP and RSS leaders because in this way the country country cannot be run. Channi said that the country belongs to its people.
He said that he was going to meet Union Home Minister Amit Shah on this issue. Reacting to the statement made by the Chief Minister of Haryana, he said that no matter which state the chief minister belongs to, stron-arm tactics will not work in this country, only democracy will prevail.
