Chennai: The cybercrime wing of the Chennai Central Crime Branch arrested two people for allegedly impersonating actor Arya and duping a Sri Lankan woman of Rs 70 lakhs. According to police, the accused have been identified as Mohammad Arman and his brother-in-law Mohammad Hussaini from Puliyanthope near Chennai. Police also seized two mobile phones, a laptop, an iPad, and important documents from the duo. They were later produced before the Egmore sessions court which remanded them in judicial custody till September 7.

The incident had come to light when Widja, a young woman from Sri Lanka who lives in Germany lodged an online complaint with the President's Office and the Prime Minister's Office last February against actor Arya. The police had questioned Arya in connection with the case on August 10. His mobile phone was confiscated and examined. The investigation revealed no evidence to establish Arya's involvement in the case. The team continued probe on the basis of the bank account and IP address of the transaction which led to the arrest of the duo on Tuesday evening. The investigation revealed the duo started a fake FB account in the name of actor Arya to befriend the woman.

Following the arrest of the duo, Arya took to Twitter to thank Chennai police for nabbing the accused and his fans for trusting him. "I would like to thank Commissioner of Police, Additional Commissioner of Police-Central Crime Branch and Cyber Crime Team of Chennai city for arresting the Real culprit. It was a real mental trauma which I never expressed. Love to everyone who believed in me," Arya wrote.
