New Delhi:Twitter has appointed Vinay Prakash as its resident grievances officer for India. As per the information updated on the company's website, Vinay Prakash is the resident grievances officer (RGO) and users can contact him using an email ID listed on the page.
Twitter had previously appointed Dharmendra Chatur as its interim resident grievances officer for India as required by the IT rules. However, Chatur stepped down two weeks ago.
The US-based company has been in the eye of a storm over its alleged failure to comply with the new IT rules in India, which mandates, among other requirements, the appointment of three key personnel -- chief compliance officer, nodal officer and grievance officer by social media platforms with over 50 lakh users. All the three personnel have to be residents in India.
The Delhi High Court, on July 8, had asked Twitter to file its affidavits that they will take full responsibility for its conduct under the amended Information Technology Rules. It also noted that no affidavit has been filed, but a short note signed by the counsel for Twitter India has been filed. In the reply, Twitter's counsel said the officer will be bound to implement IT Rules and agree to file an affidavit. While pulling up the micro-blogging site, the Bench also said that the Centre is free to take any action against Twitter if it finds the social media platform breaching the IT Rules.
While responding to the high court, the social media site had said that it will take eight weeks to appoint resident grievances officer (RGO) in compliance with the new IT Rules, and it is in a process of setting up a liaison office in India, which will be its permanent physical contact address.
