Tripura's hand-rolled tea set to fly to Denmark

A small consignment of hand-rolled tea prepared in a co-operative society run tea factory of Tripura is set for an international trip to Denmark. The tea is expected to fetch a handsome sum.

Amritsar: Hand-rolled tea prepared in a co-operative society run tea factory of Tripura is set for an international trip to Denmark. An Amritsar based company has bought a small consignment of five Kgs of this specially prepared hand-rolled tea to export it to Denmark, tea connoisseur and TTDC (Tripura Tea Development Corporation) board of director member Diganta Barman said.

Barman, a tea enthusiast who has served for Tea Board India for a long time also said, “Tripura tea has all the potential to leave its mark in the national as well as international markets. Due to the rich flavour and unique blend Tripura tea evokes attention of one and all in the markets”.

He said, “this is the highest price that this kind of Tripura tea has ever fetched in the international markets. Earlier, the price touched the limit of ten thousand but this time it has reached Rs 12,500. This tea is exclusively prepared in the Pancham Nagar tea factory located near Kailashahar under Tripura's Unakoti district being run by a co-operative society. It is the society that takes over the old government factory and now produces quality tea under the brand name Neermahal tea”.

Hand-rolled tea is a special kind of tea. In orthodox tea preparations, a special withering mechanism is used to dry up the leaves after plucking but in this case, the leaves are rolled through hands for drying. Rolling twists and breaks the leaves to release natural juices making it taste different.

Amritsar based Shahjada Export Limited had brought the consignment of five Kg tea for above Rs 65,000. The Shahjada exports is a renowned exporter of tea and has links in markets of Europe and Gulf countries.
