Agartala: A total of 20 incidents of attacks on legislators took place in Tripura in the last three years and police succeeded in arresting a 36 miscreants for their active involvement in the attacks from July 2018 to July 2021.
According to the state home department's data tabled in the state assembly, a total of 10 MLAs of BJP, IPFT and CPI-M were attacked in the last three years in several parts of the state. In all the cases, complaints were lodged and proceedings were initiated barring a few instances where the accused could not be traced by the police.
In response to an unstarred question by CPI-M MLA Moboshar Ali, Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb, through a written answer, gave a clear picture of the incidents of attacks and proceedings taken against these. According to the details, eight MLAs of the opposition CPI-M have been attacked so far in the state and one MLA each from the ruling parties BJP and IPFT - Rampada Jamatia and NC Debbarma - came under attacks. Some of the MLAs like Ratan Bhowmik and Badal Chowdhury were attacked multiple times.

However, in connection with the incidents, a total of 20 cases were lodged and 36 accused were arrested. But, the records also revealed that in 10 out of the 20 cases, no one has been arrested by the police. The home department data also said that 196 persons were named in the 20 FIRs registered. The aforementioned data was collected and compiled in from from July 6, 2018, to July 5, 2021.
Meanwhile, there has been some achievement in terms of the number of accused people absconding. According to the data published by the state assembly, in the 2021 (till July 31) a total of 3,144 accused persons were registered as absconding. But, if compared with the previous years records, the figure is satisfactory if not perfect. In the year 2018, the number of absconders stood at 11,747 and it decreased to 10,455 in 2019.
In 2020, a further dip was recorded with a total of 5,854 cases of absconders reported. Police sources said, due to reopening of many old cases, the police succeeded in arresting more absconders in the last few years.
