After a huge setback in Rio Olympics five years ago, India's star weightlifter Mirabai Chanu won India it's first silver medal in Women's-49Kg event here on Saturday at the Tokyo Olympics.

2. Himanta, Sangma moot joint visit to end Assam-Meghalaya border row

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and his Meghalaya counterpart Conrad Sangma have decided to adopt a pragmatic approach and move from status quo to solution to the disputed areas between the two states soon. Both the chief ministers met on Friday evening at Meghalaya capital Shillong to discuss the vexed inter state border issue.

3. Shamshera a 'visual extravaganza', Ranbir gave 'best' in 'complex human emotions' drama

Filmmaker Karan Malhotra, who has directed the upcoming film Shamshera, has shared that the movie will be a visual spectacle for audiences. He also opened up about what the lead cast, Ranbir Kapoor, Sanjay Dutt and Vaani Kapoor have to offer. On his birthday on Saturday, Malhotra is busy with the mix of Shamshera, which he tags as a visual extravaganza with complex human emotions.

4. Palestinian teenager killed by Israeli soldiers in West Bank: Ministry

A Palestinian teenager was killed and dozens were injured on Friday in clashes between Palestinian protesters and Israeli soldiers in the West Bank. The Palestinian health ministry said in a statement that Mohammed Tamimi, 17 years old, was killed in the clashes at Nabi Saleh village northwest of the West Bank city of Ramallah.  

5. Death toll from rainstorms in China's Henan reaches 56

The death toll from the torrential rainstorms in China's Henan province had increased to 56, with five people reported missing, local authorities said. Rescue efforts, including drainage operations, are still underway at Jingguang Road tunnel in the provincial capital Zhengzhou, a waterlogged underpass where many vehicles had been trapped since Tuesday, according to the provincial emergency management department.

The US has said it is against the use of spying technology on civil society, regime critics and journalists through "extrajudicial means", even as it maintained that it has no particular insight into the Pegasus snooping case in India. The alleged use of the Pegasus software to spy on politicians, journalists, human rights defenders and others in many countries, including India, has triggered concerns over issues relating to privacy.

1.India records 39k fresh COVID cases, 546 deaths

India reported 39,097 fresh COVID-19 cases in the last 24 hours, as per the data updated by the Union Health and Family Welfare Ministry at 8 am on Saturday. The COVID-19 death toll has climbed to 4,20,016 with 546 fresh fatalities.

2. 136 dead in rain-related incidents in the state: Maharashtra minister

As many as 136 people have died in rain-related incidents, including multiple landslides, in Maharashtra over the last two days, while 84,452 people under the Pune division were shifted to safer places on Friday as heavy showers continued to wreak havoc in the state, officials said.  

3. 2 militants killed in encounter in J-K's Bandipora

Two unidentified militants were killed in an encounter that broke out between militants and security forces in Shokbaba forest in the Sumblar area of Bandipora on Saturday. With this, a total of 100 militants have been killed this year in the Valley, according to the police.

4.Shilpa Shetty brutally trolled for promoting Hungama 2 amid Raj Kundra's arrest

Actor Shilpa Shetty Kundra on Friday urged to her fans to watch her latest comedy Hungama 2 and not let the film "suffer" in the wake of her husband, businessman Raj Kundra, was arrested in a porn films case. The actor received major backlash on social media for promoting the film amid her husband's arrest in a case related to alleged creation of pornographic films and publishing them through some apps.

5. Tokyo Olympics, Day 2: Indian judoka Sushila loses her round of 32 clash

Indian judoka Sushila Devi's challenge in the Tokyo Olympics came to an early end as she lost her contest to Hungarian Eva Csernoviczki, who qualified for a round of 16 clash against Japan's Funa Tonaki, here on Saturday.

The US administration, led by President Joe Biden, believes lasting peace in Afghanistan is possible only through a political solution, the White House has said, noting the ongoing dialogue between the government of the war-torn country and the Taliban.
