Srinagar: Terrorist killed in retaliatory fire by police

While the police were able to neutralise an armed attacker, another managed to flee the spot, Kashmir Zone police said in a tweet. Police have recovered arms and ammunition from the dead militant.

Srinagar:A terrorist was killed in an exchange of fire with the police here who retaliated after the ultras fired on them in Natipora area of the city, officials said Friday.

"Terrorists fired upon Srinagar Police team. Police also retaliated. During ensuing chance #encounter, one terrorist got neutralised but one escaped," Kashmir Zone Police wrote on its official Twitter handle.

The police said arms and ammunition were also recovered from the site.

"At Natipora crossing, unidentified militants fired upon police team. The attack was befittingly retaliated and one militant was killed after a brief gunfight," a senior police official said.

He further said, "Thought one militant was neutralised but another managed to escape. Searches have been launched in the area to nab him. Arms and ammunition have been recovered from the slain militant whose identity is yet to be ascertained."

According to the IDs recovered from the slain militant, the attacker was recognised as Aqib Bashir Kumar of Trenz Shopian, Kashmir Zone police said and added that Kumar was affiliated with proscribed terror outfit Lashkar-E-Taiba.

Interestingly, the attack on the police team comes at a time when the city is already on high alert in the wake of recent civilian killings.
