Students clash with cops over boat tragedy in Majuli

Hundreds of agitators, mostly college students took to the streets in the Island district on Thursday protesting against the government's alleged apathy towards the Island that led to the boat tragedy on Wednesday.

Majuli:A clash broke out between security personnel and hundreds of people on Thursday after the boat accident on Wednesday that lead to the death of one person in Assam's Majuli Island.

The incident took place at the Gormur area of Majuli, soon after Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma left the island after reviewing the rescue operations.

Hundreds of agitators, mostly college students took to the streets in the Island district on Thursday protesting against government's alleged apathy towards the Island that led to the boat tragedy on Wednesday. On Thursday, protestors also gheraoed the convoy of Assam Power Minister Bimal Bora who had reached the Island on Wednesday night to take stock of the situation.

Police had to resort to lathi-charge as the agitation turned unruly with the students suddenly pulling down the security barricades.

Officials, however, said that no one suffered any injuries.
