Many injured as BJP and TMC workers clash in Bengal

A violent clash between BJP and TMC activists left several people injured in Contai. BJP blamed the ruling TMC for the violence police had to intervene to pacify the situation.

Ramnagar: Several persons were injured in a clash between Trinamool Congress and BJP activists at Ramnagar in West Bengal Wednesday ahead of TMC's rally in Contai, the stronghold of Suvendu Adhikari who joined the saffron party recently.

Police said the clash broke out when a procession by BJP activists was passing near a TMC party office on Ramnagar Road in Purba Medinipur district.
Several persons were injured in the clash, which took place when one group attacked another and the subsequent retaliation, police said.

BJP District President of Kanthi Anup Chakraborty said, "We were moving peacefully in a procession when TMC leaders attacked us. We told the police that our leaders are being attacked but they stood as mute spectators. The state police is a puppet of the TMC government."

However, police brought the situation under control and TMC and BJP traded charges on the clash. BJP alleged that TMC activists attacked its party workers without any provocation when they were moving in a procession.

Countering the charges, TMC claimed that BJP vandalised its party office and beat up its workers present.

TMC leader Suprakash Giri said, "TMC is not involved in this attack. We are a politically strong party. There is infighting among the BJP leaders as to become the Ramnagar Chief. We are busy preparing for a big programme at Kanthi."
