New Delhi: The Supreme Court bench led by the Chief Justice of India, NV Ramana, pulled up the state of Jharkhand and Union Public Service Commission for the appointment of Director General of Police flouting the two-year tenure rule. The bench also comprising of Justice Surya Kant and Justice AS Bopanna was hearing a contempt case against the state of Jharkhand and UPSC for defying the minimum two-year tenure rule.

"This is absolutely incorrect on part of the state government," said CJI Ramanna. However, the state said it had made repeated requests to the UPSC to form a panel for DGP selection. Rather, the state was asked to approach the top court, said state's lawyer.

The court said that it has seen the affidavit by the UPSC and slammed it saying that they don't even know what is happening in the state. "UPSC needs an overhaul, I can't say anything more than this," said CJI Ramana. The SC also directed to implead incumbent DGP Neeraj Sinha in the case and adjourned the matter for hearing.
