2019 Hyderabad encounter: Why this matter is going on and on, asks SC

The Supreme Court has granted a six months extension to three-member inquiry commission, headed by former apex court judge V S Sirpurkar, investigating the Hyderabad encounter wherein four men accused of gang rape and murder were allegedly gunned down by the police in 2019.

New Delhi:The Supreme Court has granted a six months extension to three-member inquiry commission, headed by former apex court judge V S Sirpurkar, investigating the Hyderabad encounter wherein four men were accused of gang rape and murder were allegedly gunned down by the police in 2019. The bench led by the Chief Justice of India, NV Ramana expressing dissatisfaction over the delay and asked, "Why this matter is going on and on."

Reports said, previously two extensions each in July 2020 and January 2021 were granted to the inquiry commission for the submission of its report. The panel was first ordered in December 2019 to complete its investigation and submit its report.

Disha, a doctor, was gang-raped and murdered by four men on November 27, 2019, at night and her body was discovered a day later. The incident had created an uproar in the country witnessing many protests.

As per the police, the accused were arrested, taken to the crime scene location for recreating the scene. Meanwhile, two of the accused snatched their guns and attacked them. In response to this, the police fired at them leading to their deaths.

The encounter, though praised by people and some leaders, raised suspicion and pleas were filed in the SC seeking a fair investigation into the encounter. The apex court constituted the three-member committee to probe into the matter and the investigation is underway.
