AIIMS told to conduct exams for excluded students

The AIIMS Gorakhpur had refused to allow the 11 students to sit in the first-year examinations on account of low attendance. A bench of the apex court directed AIIMS Gorakhpur to conduct the examinations.

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Tuesday directed the All India Institute of Medical Science (AIIMS) Gorakhpur to conduct the examinations for 11 first-year students whose attendance was low due to COVID-19.

The court said that on account of the pandemic, the 11 aggrieved students who were denied to take the exam due to lack of the attendance, will be allowed to and it is not necessary to get into contention with the college regarding the matter.

The bench comprising of Justice L Nageswara Rao and Justice Ravindra Bhat was hearing a plea by the students who had contended that some of them belong to remote areas and therefore could not attend online classes leading to the shortage of attendance.

They pleaded that they should be given the benefit like other professional exams conducted by AIIMS.

Meanwhile, the top court clarified that they are passing the order in favour of students considering the pandemic but it should not be taken as a precedent in future.

However, The AIIMS was not willing to give an extra chance to the students as their attendance before the pandemic was also low.
