Amritsar: An attempt to desecrate the Golden Temple by an identified person has ended with the accused being lynched to death.
According to eyewitnesses, a young man made an attempt to disrespect the Guru Granth Sahib but was promptly stopped by employees of the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee. However, the accused was beaten to death by enraged devotees. The holy book remained untouched during the altercation.
Sacrilege attempt at Golden Temple The incident took place around 6 pm, while evening worship was going on.
Speaking with media personnel, Sukhdev Singh, an Inspector with the Amritsar Police said, "The matter is under investigation. The body has been taken to the hospital. Who that person was, where he is from, we'll soon find out,"
Singh appealed to the people to maintain calm. He assured that the whole matter will be investigated thoroughly.
Sacrilege attempt at Golden Temple, Police investigating matter DSP Amritsar, Parminder Singh Bhandal while talking to media said, "During the evening recitation, one 24-25-year-old man entered Harmandir Sahib and picked up Siri Sahib (sword) of Guru ji, but the man was promptly apprehended by the SGPC task force. But while taking the accused into custody, he was beaten up by enraged devotees which led to his death."
Bhandal said that the body has been sent to the Civil Hospital Amritsar for post-mortem. He said that the police is investigating the matter and trying to identify the accused.
Bhandal said that the police will also check the CCTV footage to determine what happened.
Former Punjab CM Prakash Singh Badal has demanded a separate agency enquiry from the central govt in the matter.
Manjinder Singh Sirsa condemns sacrilege attempt at Golden Temple BJP leader Manjinder Singh Sirsa condemned the incident calling it a conspiracy.
"A few days back also an incident of sacrilege had come to the fore about which I have spoken to Home Minister Amit Shah and he expressed grief over the incident and said that this matter will be investigated," Sirsa said.
