Chandigarh:The law and order in Punjab has "completely broken down", Congress leader Rahul Gandhi said on Tuesday after he met the family of slain Punjabi singer and party leader Sidhu Moosewala, and expressed his condolences at the latter's village in Punjab's Mansa district. He was driven straight to the residence after landing at the Chandigarh airport in the morning and paid a floral tribute to the deceased singer during his nearly hour-long stay.
Taking to Twitter after the meeting, Rahul said: "It is difficult to describe the grief that the parents of Congress leader Sidhu Musewala ji are going through. It is our duty to give them justice, and we will do so. The law and order of the state has completely broken down. Maintaining peace and tranquility in Punjab is not a matter for the AAP government."
State Congress leaders Amarinder Singh Raja Warring, Leader of Opposition in the state assembly Partap Singh Bajwa, and former Deputy CM O P Soni, accompanied Rahul during the visit. Moosewala, who had joined the Congress party in December 2021, was assassinated by unknown assailants on May 29 in Mansa. This took place a day after his security cover was withdrawn by the state government. He had unsuccessfully contested from the Mansa assembly seat in the 2022 Punjab assembly elections. Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann have already met Moosewala's parents.
After his killing, a Canada-based member of jailed gangster Lawrence Bishnoi's gang took responsibility for the crime. Senior Congress leader Partap Singh Bajwa recently wrote to Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, urging him to "transfer the murder case to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) or the National Investigation Agency (NIA) so that justice can be delivered to the family at the earliest."
