In protest of farm laws, Rahul Gandhi drives tractor to Parliament

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi arrived in a tractor to the Parliament on Monday. Gandhi drove the tractor himself and said he wanted to lend a voice to the poor farmers.

New Delhi: Congress MP Rahul Gandhi on Monday took out a 'Tractor Yatra' to reach Parliament as a mark of protest against the three contentious farm laws. Other Congress MPs including Partap Singh Bajwa, Deepender Hooda, Gurjeet Aujla, Ravneet Bittu, too, accompanied Gandhi.

The Congress has been raising the issue in Parliament during its ongoing Monsoon Session. Other Opposition MPs also moved an Adjournment motion in both the Houses demanding a discussion over the matter. Rahul Gandhi, who was driving a tractor with other leaders holding placards demanding the repeal of farm laws, told reporters, "We have brought the farmers' message to Parliament. The government doesn't let any discussions on this issue in Parliament. They've (BJP leaders) been suppressing the farmers. The three agricultural laws will have to revoked," Gandhi told reporters. Tapping on the tractor, Gandhi said the tractor was symbolic to the farmers' message and that's the reason he drove it to the House.

When asked about the government's claim that the agricultural laws were introduced to benefit the farmers and that the Congress was playing a spoilsport, Gandhi said the entire country knew the news laws would benefit only two-three big businessmen. "These laws are brought to benefit two-three big businessmen and the entire nation knows this. These laws are not for the benefit of the farmers and they will have to be revoked," he asserted.

Congress General Secretary and Chief Spokesperson Randeep Singh Surjewala also got detained by the Delhi Police during this protest.

Today, women will conduct 'Kisan Sansad' at Jantar Mantar as the farmers' protest against the three farm laws has completed eight months. In addition to this, Opposition parties are also expected to raise this matter in the Parliament today.
