Chandigarh: Ahead of the Congress Legislative Party (CLP) meeting in Punjab, Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh resigned on Saturday. He met Governor Banwarilal Purohit and submitted his resignation.
CM Amarinder Singh will address a press conference at Punjab Raj Bhawan Gate, said Raveen Thukral, Media Advisor to Punjab CM.
According to sources, the veteran leader is upset with the way he has been treated by party's central leadership. He is also likely to skip the CLP meeting at 5 pm.
Earlier this morning, Captain Amarinder spoke to Congress president Sonia Gandhi and told her he is being humiliated and will resign from the party.
"I spoke with the Congress president this morning, told them that I will be resigning today... This is the third time in recent months in meeting MLAs... which is why I decided to quit," he told reporters.
The turn of events in the state Congress has been unfolding even as the AICC has decided to convene a meeting of the CLP to sort out the misgivings in the wake of a fresh letter by a section of the MLAs, apparently from the Navjot Singh Sidhu's group.

The probable names that are doing rounds for the chief minister’s post include former PCC president Sunil Jakhar, minister Sukhjinder Randhawa and former CM Rajender Kaur Bhattal.
It may be mentioned that after the conversation between Captain Amarinder and Congress president Sonia Gandhi this morning, the top party leadership got into action to convey to Captain Amarinder Singh to submit his resignation.
Further, quashing any talk of him switching parties, Captain Amarinder said that he will stay with the Congress party.
"I am in the Congress party, will consult with my supporters and decide the future course of action," he announced.
