New Delhi: Congress leaders reacted against the Uttar Pradesh government and Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath for detaining Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi and preventing others to visit Lakhimpur Kheri. Uttar Pradesh Police has registered an FIR against Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Varda and 11 others for disturbing the peace in the state.
According to Hargaon Police station SHO Brijesh Tripathi, a case has been filed against 11 including Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Devindra Hooda and Ajay Kumar Lallu under Section 107/16 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). On Tuesday, Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel reached Chaudhary Charan Singh International Airport in Lucknow but he was stopped by the police from proceeding further. In protest, he sat down on the ground in the airport itself.
Reacting to the developments, former Union Minister Jairam Ramesh has said that even during extreme emergencies Modi was not stopped from addressing media during the Congress rule. "When 26/11 happened in Mumbai the Gujarat CM wasn’t stopped from addressing the media in Mumbai itself, during an extremely sensitive time. Have the PM and Mr. Ajay Mohan Bisht forgotten this?", Ramesh tweeted.
K C Venugopal, General Secretary of the Congress party, rued that Ajay Mishra's son - the man who allegedly killed 4 farmers, is still at large while Priyanka Gandhi is charged. "Yogi's version of justice! The UP Police has officially charged Smt.@priyankagandhi for wanting to visit grieving families in Lakhimpur, at the same time they have failed to arrest Ajay Mishra's son - the man who allegedly killed 4 farmers. Irony just died a thousand deaths," he tweeted.
On Sunday, four farmers died after two SUVs allegedly ran over a group of anti-farm law protesters who were demonstrating against a visit of Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya. Eight people were killed in the violence. While four of the deceased were farmers, the remaining were in a convoy of BJP workers who were lynched. Two FIRs have been registered in connection with Sunday's violence.
Ashish Mishra, the son of Union Minister of State for Home Ajay Mishra, is among those booked by police. The Uttar Pradesh government on Monday announced that a retired High Court judge will probe the Lakhimpur Kheri violence and that the families of the four farmers killed in the incident will be given Rs 45 lakh compensation.
