Chennai: President Ram Nath Kovind on Monday unveiled a portrait of former Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi in the Tamil Nadu Legislative assembly. Tamil Nadu Assembly also witnesses 100th year and President also felicitated centenary celebrations. President Kovind in his speech said that the Tamil Nadu legislature remained the fountainhead of the country by passing historic legislation like the Devadasi abolition act, the Mid-day meals scheme and so.
Praising M Karunanidhi, Kovind said that the leader had vast wisdom in Tamil literature and he's the reason for the recognition of Tamil as a classical language. "Karunanidhi started his public life at his tender age in the pre-independence era and left the world after a long life of public service. It's a fitting tribute for the great leader to unveil the portrait in the assembly along with the portraits of greats like Thiruvalluvar, Gandhi, Rajaji, Kamaraj, E.Ve. Ramasamy, Annadurai and so on," President said.

Tamil Nadu governor Banwarilal Purohit mentioned the names of TN political Stalwarts like Panagal Raja, Rajaji, T Prakasam, Kamaraj, Annadurai, Karunanidhi, and Jayalalitha. He also praised that India's first women legislature is from Tamil Nadu who's Muthulakshmi Reddy in 1927. Governor also praised Karunanidhi's scheme of Samathuvapuram houses which aimed to eradicate caste discrimination.
