President Kovind appoints new Governors for 8 states

President of India, Ram Nath Kovind appointed new Governors to Karnataka, Mizoram, Madhya Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Goa, Tripura, Jharkhand and Haryana.

New Delhi: In a major rejig, President of India, Ram Nath Kovind has appointed new Governors for eight states, while Prime Minister Narendra Modi's expected cabinet expansion is eyed upon. The Governors' reshuffle saw new appointments as well as transfers.

Thaawarchand Gehlot is appointed as Governor of Karnataka, Hari Babu Kambhampati as Governor of Mizoram, Mangubhai Chhaganbhai Patel as Governor of Madhya Pradesh, and Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar as Governor of Himachal Pradesh, said a press release.

Mizoram Governor PS Sreedharan Pillai is appointed as Goa Governor, Haryana Governor Satyadev Narayan Arya appointed as Tripura Governor, Tripura Governor Ramesh Bais appointed as Jharkhand Governor and Himachal Pradesh Governor Bandaru Dattatraya appointed as Haryana Governor.

The appointments will take effect from the dates they assume charge of their respective offices, said the office of the President.

As per reports, Thaawarchand Gehlot is the Union Minister of Social Justice and Empowerment in the National Democratic Alliance led government. He is also the Leader of the House in the upper house of the Indian Parliament. Besides, he also shoulders the post as a member of the Parliamentary Board and the Central Election Committee of the BJP.

The newly-appointed Governor of Mizoram, Hari Babu Kambhampati is a Member of Parliament from Vishakapatnam constituency in Andhra Pradesh. He also served as former state unit President of BJP for AP. He won the 2014 general election with BJP's ticket, as per reports.

Reports said Mangubhai Chhaganbhai Patel served as Deputy Speaker in Gujarat Legislative Assembly as well as a former minister in the state. His career as a parliamentarian spans from 1990-95.

Serving as Governor of Mizoram, P S Sreedharan Pillai is newly appointed as Governor of Goa. Earlier, he was BJP's president in Kerala. In 2004, he served as the BJPPrabhari of Lakshadweep UT in 2004, as per reports.

The present governor of Haryana Satyadev Narayan Arya is appointed as Tripura's Governor. Earlier, he served as Minister of Mines and Geology and Minister of Rural Development in Bihar. He had won eight times as MLA from Bihar's Rajgir, as per reports.
