New Delhi: In a major rejig, President of India, Ram Nath Kovind has appointed new Governors for eight states, while Prime Minister Narendra Modi's expected cabinet expansion is eyed upon. The Governors' reshuffle saw new appointments as well as transfers.
Thaawarchand Gehlot is appointed as Governor of Karnataka, Hari Babu Kambhampati as Governor of Mizoram, Mangubhai Chhaganbhai Patel as Governor of Madhya Pradesh, and Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar as Governor of Himachal Pradesh, said a press release.
Mizoram Governor PS Sreedharan Pillai is appointed as Goa Governor, Haryana Governor Satyadev Narayan Arya appointed as Tripura Governor, Tripura Governor Ramesh Bais appointed as Jharkhand Governor and Himachal Pradesh Governor Bandaru Dattatraya appointed as Haryana Governor.
The appointments will take effect from the dates they assume charge of their respective offices, said the office of the President.
Meet the new governors
- Thaawarchand Gehlot
As per reports, Thaawarchand Gehlot is the Union Minister of Social Justice and Empowerment in the National Democratic Alliance led government. He is also the Leader of the House in the upper house of the Indian Parliament. Besides, he also shoulders the post as a member of the Parliamentary Board and the Central Election Committee of the BJP.
- Hari Babu Kambhampati
The newly-appointed Governor of Mizoram, Hari Babu Kambhampati is a Member of Parliament from Vishakapatnam constituency in Andhra Pradesh. He also served as former state unit President of BJP for AP. He won the 2014 general election with BJP's ticket, as per reports.
