Chennai (Tamil Nadu): A Pakistani national has been sentenced to four-year imprisonment by a court in Tamil Nadu for illegally staying in India.

Identified as Mohammed Yunus, a resident of Karachi was arrested from a lodge by Tamil Nadu police in 2017 and was staying in India without a valid passport.

The police also seized Pakistani, American, and Sri Lankan currency from his possession and was booked under various sections of the Indian Police Code (IPC) and Foreign Act.

Acting on a tip-off that a suspicious man was staying at a lodge, police rushed to the spot and conducted an investigation. Investigation revealed that he planned to go to Sri Lanka without valid documents.

He was in jail for the past three years and the judge pronounced the judgement through video conferencing on Friday.

After serving four-year imprisonment, he will be handed over to concerned officials at Wagah border, until then, he will be under the control of revenue department officials.

Earlier, a local court sent an accused arrested on espionage charges in Barmer to police remand till November 2.

It is alleged that the accused, Roshandin, was sending sensitive intelligence inputs about the strategic importance associated with the border area and military activities to the Pakistani intelligence agency ISI through social media.
