New Delhi: Only two persons have purchased properties in Jammu and Kashmir since August 2019 when Article 370 was abrogated ending the special status given to the erstwhile state, Lok Sabha was informed on Tuesday.

The information was revealed by the Union Minister of State for Home Nityanand Rai in a written reply in the Lok Sabha. The revelation came in a reply to DMK MP S Ramalingam who had enquired about people purchasing properties in the newly constituted UT after the removal of Article 370.

MP Ramalingam also asked whether people interested in buying property in the Valley were facing any "hardships/impediments". Rai in his reply said that "no such instance has been reported to the government."

The Union government modified the definition of domicile for Jammu and Kashmir after its merger with the Union of India post the abrogation of Article 370. The new order defined a domicile of UT as anyone “who has resided for a period of 15 years in the UT of J&K or has studied for a period of seven years and appeared in Class 10th/12th examination in an educational institution located in the UT of J&K or who is registered as a migrant by the Relief and Rehabilitation Commissioner (Migrants).”
