Delhi riots: 3 policemen to undergo lie detection test

The Delhi Police Crime Branch which is investigating the case of North-East Delhi riots that took place last year, intend to subject three Delhi Armed Police personnel to a lie detection test.

New Delhi: The Delhi Police Crime Branch which is investigating the case of North-East Delhi riots that took place last year, intend to subject three Delhi Armed Police personnel to a lie detection test. The development assumes significance given the fact that the crime branch had identified three police personnel of having allegedly pressurized some youths, belonging to a particular community, to sing the national anthem. Also, during the incident, a young man had allegedly died due to police assault which led to a murder case being registered in this regard.

As per reports, a viral video of the incident that took place on 25th February 2020 had surfaced, in which some policemen were seen roughing up some youths brutally using lathis. The youths were then taken to the Jyoti Nagar police station and later released. Following this, an investigation was initiated, and several police personnel were interrogated by the SIT team of the Delhi Police Crime Branch.

Subsequently, three policemen were identified, who are suspected to be involved in the incident. However, as the policemen are denying that they have not been involved in the case, the SIT team intend to conduct a lie detector test.

North-East Delhi witnessed riots on 24-25 February in which the Delhi Police has registered 755 FIRs so far and arrested 1818 people. 18 people have been accused by the Special Cell of Delhi Police in the case of conspiracy in these riots. 17 of these accused are in jail. However, one Safura Zargar was granted bail by the High Court on humanitarian grounds.

Tahir Hussain, Umar Khalid, Khalid Saifi, Ishrat Jahan, Miran Haider, Gulfisha, Shafa ur Rehman, Asif Iqbal Tanha, Shadab Ahmed, Taslim Ahmed, Salim Malik, Mohammad Salim Khan, Athar Khan, Sharjeel Imam, Faizan Khan, Natasha Narwal and Dewangan Kalita are among those who were held under UAPA in connection with the case.
