NIA arrests IPS officer for leaking secret documents to LeT

NIA on Friday arrested IPS officer Arvind Digvijay Negi for allegedly leaking highly classified documents to an Over Ground Worker (OGW) of the Lashkar-e-Toiba. The law enforcement agency also conducted searches in the IPS officer's residence in connection with the case.

Srinagar (J&K): The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Friday arrested a senior police officer for allegedly leaking classified information to overground workers of banned Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT). Negi was arrested in connection with a case registered in November last year.

"Superintendent of Police (SP) Shimla Arvind Digvijay Singh has been arrested by NIA along with five other persons in connection with a case registered by the agency on November 6, 2021," an NIA officer told ETV Bharat citing anonymity.

He further said, "Negi was promoted as IPS officer in 2011 and has earlier served in NIA too. He was posted as SP Shimla after being repatriated from NIA."

Speaking about the case, the officer said, "Presently, the NIA is probing the issue of providing local support to militants associated with LeT outfit. So far six people have been arrested by the agency in connection with the case."

"During the investigation, the NIA sleuths found the conduct of a police officer (Negi) suspicious. And when the investigation was conducted, it came to light that Negi has compromised. His houses were searched and it was found that Negi had leaked NIA's classified documents to an OGW of LeT. The said OGW is also accused in the case," he added.

The officer claimed that the arrest of a senior police officer has widened the scope of investigation for the agency. "I believe more arrests could be made in this soon as the arrest of a senior cop has widened the scope of the investigation," he said.

Who is Arvind Digvijay Singh Negi?

Negi, an IPS officer who originally hails from Himachal's Kinnaur has been considered as a fearless and honest officer. He was a DSP and served as a Principal Investigator in the Special Investigation Team formed to investigate the CPMT paper leak case that came to light in the state in the year 2006. At that time a charge sheet was made against 119 accused including the brother of a sitting minister. Apart from this, he has also been famous for nabbing an accused in Shimla's famous Ishita acid case and also played a crucial role in the investigation of many other cases.

Negi who is a native of Himachal's Shimla had completed his bachelor's degree from Kotshera College located in Chaura Maidan.
