Delhi: NCM demands action report from cops on anti-Muslim slogans in an event

The National Commission for Minorities (NCM) has taken suo-moto cognisance regarding an event, "Bharat Jodo Movement" which took place at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi, where anti-Muslim slogans were raised. The NCM has asked the Deputy Commissioner of Police, New Delhi, to submit the action taken report on the matter by 10 August.

New Delhi: The National Commission for Minorities (NCM) has taken suo-moto cognisance regarding an event, "Bharat Jodo Movement" which took place at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi, where anti-Muslim slogans were raised. The NCM has asked the Deputy Commissioner of Police, New Delhi, to submit the action taken report on the matter by August 10.

As directed by the Vice Chairman, NCM, the Commission has taken suo-moto cognizance of the news in the social media regarding an event organized under "Bharat Jodo Movement" which took place at Jantar Mantar, wherein anti-Muslim slogans were raised," the letter undersigned by NCM director A. Dhanalakshmi stated. "The same has hurt the sentiments of the Muslim community. You are directed to be present in the Commission on August 10 at 12 noon and submit the following information before the Commission : (i) What action has been taken against the persons who raised such anti-Muslim slogans in the event? (ii) Whether any arrests have been made and if so, under which section the accused have been booked. (iii) With whose permission such events are organised and what are the measures taken to prevent such incidents in future?," the NCM letter sent to the DCP of New Delhi further added.

Notably, a video showing anti-Muslim slogans were allegedly raised during a march titled 'Colonial Laws & Make Uniform Laws' held at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi on Sunday. The viral video sparked outrage on social media. According to the police, the organisers of the event didn't have permission to carry out the rally.

The march was organised by Supreme Court lawyer and former state BJP spokesperson Ashwini Upadhyay under the banner of 'Bharat Jodo Movement'. TV actor and BJP leader Gajendra Chauhan was also reportedly a part of the protest march.
