Chennai:The Madras High Court has directed the Income Tax (I-T) department to respond to a petition filed by Karti Chidambaram challenging the order to re-evaluate his income tax amount for 2014-2015.

Karti, a Lok Sabha member and son of former Union Minister P Chidambaram, sold his property in Muttukadu near Chennai to Agni Estates Foundation for Rs 6.38 crore in 2015. The I-T department issued him and his wife Srinidhi a notice stating that his income tax returns for 2014-15 and 2015-16 did not reflect the tax amount he paid for the sale of the Muttukadu property.

On July 15, the I-T department ordered re-evaluation of the income tax account for the year 2014-2015 and later directed Karti to pay Rs 3.86 crore in taxes. Karti filed a petition against this in the Madras High Court. His petition stated that the IT-department issued its latest order pending an appeal filed by a separate judge against the earlier order and did not give them sufficient time to explain their case.

Judge Mahadevan, hearing the petition, ordered the I-T department to respond and adjourned the hearing to July 28.
