MS Dhoni's Rs 100 cr defamation case adjourned by Madras HC

The Madras High Court on Tuesday adjourned the ongoing defamation case filed by cricketer MS Dhoni against a private television seeking Rs 100 crore in compensation for alleging involving former Indian cricket team skipper in the IPL gambling.

Chennai (Tamil Nadu): The Madras High Court on Tuesday adjourned the ongoing defamation case filed by cricketer MS Dhoni against a private television seeking Rs 100 crore in compensation. Dhoni in 2014 had filed a suit against media companies and also suspended Tamil Nadu Police officer G. Sampath Kumar (IPS). The IPS officer, who was investigating the IPL gambling probe, had issued a statement saying that the former Indian cricket team skipper was also involved in the gambling.

Following the reports, seeking Rs 100 crore, MS Dhoni had filed a defamation case against a private television channel that conducted a debate on the issue. In this context, the private television replied, "The Chennai Super Kings team was involved in match-fixing along with the Rajasthan Royals team. The mediator Kitty, testified that Dhoni was involved in gambling."

"It has been alleged that CBCID (Crime-Branch Crime Investigation Department) is pursuing the case by concealing Kitty's confession to save Dhoni. Dhoni is not superior to cricket and the SC also recently commented that cricket is becoming the origin of gambling," the private TV channel said, adding that they had no personal grudge against Dhoni and that the debate was held to highlight the gambling issue taking place in cricket.

Judge N Seshai who heard the case said that freedom of expression should be there without compromising individual rights. Following that he has adjourned the case for two weeks to define the charges.
