The incident that took place in the Varun Vihar area of the city on Wednesday (August 11) had come to light after a video showing the victim's minor daughter crying and pleading with the mob to spare her father went viral on social media platforms. Reportedly, the mob continued to assault the man even when he was being taken away by the police. Family members of the victim said that some men barged into their house, accusing the man of trying to forcibly convert a woman, and then took him out onto the road, where he was paraded and assaulted.

What exactly is the issue?

A woman living in the man's neighbourhood alleged that he and his family members have been forcing her to convert her religion. When the woman refused to do so, they began harassing her and her two daughters. Unable to take it further, she had even lodged a complaint with the police but no action was taken. She also claimed that the man had offered to give her Rs 20,000 if she converted. As no action was taken against the man by the police, the woman finally approached right-wing activists.

However, the victim and his family members rubbished the woman's allegations as baseless. Meanwhile, a case has been registered and an investigation is underway. "We have registered a case based on the man's complaint against some named and some unidentified people.

The matter is being investigated and the footage of the assault is being scanned," said Raveena Tyagi, the Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP-South Kanpur).
