Kerala woman, who was stabbed 17 times, succumbs to injuries

Thiruvananthapuram: A 20-year-old woman, who was allegedly stabbed by a youth multiple times at Nedumangad in Thiruvananthapuram, succumbed to her injuries at a hospital here on Tuesday.

Suryagayathri, a native of Nedumangad, was stabbed by her male friend on Monday. Arun, who allegedly barged into her rented house stabbed her using a sharp-edged weapon. The woman, who sustained 17 stab wounds to the chest and neck, was admitted to Thiruvananthapuram Medical College Hospital where she underwent emergency surgery. However, she succumbed to her stab wounds today morning, hospital sources said.

The victim's differently-abled mother Valsala, who was injured during the assault, is undergoing treatment at the hospital.

Suryagayathri has been living with her parents for the past six months after she left her in-law's place following some issues with her husband. Arun, a native of Peyad, and the victim have known each other for many years.

The victim's neighbours got hold of Arun who was hiding in the toilet of another house following the incident and handed over him to the police.

Arun, who sustained injuries to his hand during the attack, is being treated at Nedumangad hospital. "His arrest will be recorded soon. Further investigations are underway," police said.
