Kerala Assembly polls at a glance

Out of 140 constituencies, the political party which wins over 71 seats would rule Kerala from 2021 to 2026. Over two crore voters of the state would decide the fate of candidates in a triangular contest for power.

Hyderabad: As citizens in Kerala heads to exercise their franchise on April 6, people’s verdict would decide whether the state’s anti-incumbency tradition would continue or not. As the ruling Left Democratic Front resonated ‘LDF for sure, LDF sure for a consecutive term’ in its flamboyant rallies, the United Democratic Front put forth the slogan ‘UDF for a better Kerala’ while the Bharatiya Janata Party raised the slogan ‘New Kerala with Modi.’ As the triangular contest gets heated up, ETV Bharat illustrates the nuances of the election.

As per the Election Commission, Kerala has a total of 2,74,46,039 voters. It should also be noted that women voters are higher in proportion than men.While women constitute 1,37,79,263 voters, there are only 1,29,52,025 men and 221 transgenders in Kerala’s voters’ list.

Upon analysis it was found that the highest number of crorepati candidates are from Congress, followed by the BJP and the CPIM.

Tracking records, it was found that 38% of candidates have criminal background with the highest proportion from the INC, followed by the BJP and the CPIM.

Candidates involved in criminal cases

It should be noted that the BJP’s K Surendran has topped the list with 248 cases registered against him, followed by Dr K S Radhakrishnan and A N Radhakrishnan of the same party.

Women candidates

Women contest the most as independent candidate while the BJP has also given ticket for 15 candidates. Meanwhile, 11 women candidates contest from the LDF and 9 are from the Congress.

Educational background of candidates

Kerala, the most literate state, has 15 PhD holder candidates, while four are illiterates. Meanwhile, analysis of candidates' educational background pointed out that the highest proportion of candidates, 279, have passed 10th.

Age group of candidates

The 2021 Assembly polls are mainly headed by candidates of the age group between 41 and 50.

The counting of votes is scheduled on May 2.
