TN village holds celebrations for Kamala Harris

Thulasendrapuram (Tamil Nadu):People in the village of Thulasendrapuram in Tamil Nadu woke up Sunday morning to the news of Kamal Harris becoming the next US vice president after Democrat Joe Biden was declared winner in the US presidential election.

Thulasendrapuram is the ancestral village of Ms Harris where her grandparents lived before migrating to Chennai.

Harris, the daughter of Jamaican and Indian immigrants, is the first woman to be elected to the US vice presidency.

The news was celebrated in Thulasendrapuram, where Harris’ maternal grandfather was born.

Women wrote "Congratulations Kamala Harris, pride of our village, Vanakkam (Greetings) America" in coloured powder on the streets.

Other villagers gathered at street corners reading newspapers and chatting about the Democrats' victory before moving to the temple for prayers.

They planned to celebrate her success with singing, dancing and firecrackers later in the day.

Cutouts and posters wishing Harris a "grand success" adorned walls in the village.

Harris’ late mother also was born in India, before moving to the US at the age of 19 to study at the University of California.

She married a Jamaican, and they named their daughter Kamala, Sanskrit for “lotus flower”.

"We are happy. Congratulations Kamala Harris. Since November 3 we were waiting for her to win and we are very happy and congrats again." said Arulmozhi Sudhakar, Thulasendrapuram village councillor
