Kokrajhar: Gujarat Independent legislator and Dalit rights activist Jignesh Mevani was rearrested soon after he was granted bail by Kokrajhar Court in Assam on Monday.
Mevani was arrested by Assam police once again on Monday regarding a case registered in Barpeta police station. "Barpeta Police re-arrested Gujarat MLA Jignesh Mevani in connection with another case, right after he was granted bail in the matter connected to his tweet," Advocate Angshuman Bora, Mevani's lawyers said. In the fresh case (Case number 81/22), Mevani was charged under sections 294, 323, 353, 354 of the IPC, police said.
Mevani was earlier arrested over a tweet on PM Narendra Modi on April 20. He was flown to Assam on April 21 and produced in the CJM court in Kokrajhar. Although his counsel moved the bail petition, the court rejected the bail and remanded him into three-day police custody. On the expiry of the police custody, the court reserved its verdict and sent him to judicial custody for Sunday night.
