Ranchi/Hyderabad:A lot of evil acts are being seen in society. This incident is heart-wrenching & the law is taking its course. The accused has been arrested. It is our effort to see that he is punished at the earliest, says Jharkhand Chief Minister on death of a girl after being set ablaze in Dumka.

Such people should not be forgiven, they should be given the strictest of punishments. Laws should be brought in to further strengthen the existing laws for such incidents, the CM added while offering condolences to the bereaved family, ANI reported.

Earlier, Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) working president KT Rama Rao (KTR) had also demanded for amendment of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) and the Juvenile Justice Act in such a way that such criminals do not get away with their crimes.

"Horrible Criminals like Shahrukh have no place in civil society. No remorse as you can see! We need to amend IPC, CrPC & Juvenile Justice Act so that none of these beasts get away/out using the loopholes in our laws Strong legislations are the only deterrent to avoid recurrence," KTR wrote in twitter. KTR had quoted a tweet which showed the accused walking holding his head high while being arrested by the police on Aug 23.

VHP national spokesperson Vinod Bansal said that he was saddened by the teenager's death and urged the Jharkhand government to take stringent action the accused. VHP along with Bajrang Dal have been vocally protesting against the incident. Their demonstrations and rallies have kept the non-descript town on the edge.

The accused youth had attacked Ankita Kumari, a class 12 girl, after she refused his advances. The incident took place in the Jaruadih locality of the city police station area of Jharkhand's Dumka district. Police has arrested the accused. According to sources, Shahrukh, who lives in the neighbourhood, was continuously harassing Ankita.

He had managed to get her phone number from somewhere and started forcing her to befriend him. It is alleged that when Ankita did not agree and rebuked him, Shahrukh lost his cool and threatened to kill her. The accused splashed petrol on the girl while she was asleep and set her afire.

The girl suffered 90% burn injuries and was admitted to Phoolo Jhano Medical College Hospital (FJMCH). Later, she was referred to Ranchi's Rajendra Institute of Medical Science (RIMS) where she succumbed. Her death led to tension as right wing groups protested across Dumka and a prohibitory order was issued to ensure peace and calm.

Meanwhile, the National Commission for Women (NCW) chief Rekha Sharma has written to the DGP, Jharkhand to look into the matter and to ensure that a fair investigation is accomplished in a time-bound manner. “The Commission is anguished with the reported crime and has taken cognizance of the matter. Chairperson Rekha Sharma has written to Director General of Police, Jharkhand to look into the matter and to ensure that a fair investigation is accomplished in a time-bound manner”, a statement from NCW read.
