New Delhi:Delhi Police on Tuesday formally arrested BJP leader Ashwini Upadhyay and five others for having allegedly made inflammatory remarks at an event held at Jantar Mantar on Sunday. According to police, all six who have been arrested are being interrogated in connection with the August 8 incident adding that the matter is being dealt as per law and any communal disharmony will not be tolerated. Police are interrogating - Ashwani Upadhyay, Vinod Sharma, Deepak Singh, Vineet Kranti, Preet Singh and Deepak.
On August 9, a First Information Report was registered against unidentified persons for having raised objectionable remarks at Jantar Mantar. The accused had gathered at Jantar Mantar on Sunday evening for a protest rally titled 'Colonial Laws & Make Uniform Laws'. "People who had gathered at Jantar Mantar had no permission. It has come to our due notice that some people raised inciting & objectionable slogans as well. We have also received a video and have registered FIR in the case. We're carrying out further investigation into the matter. Necessary action will be taken at the earliest," said Deepak Yadav, Delhi DCP.

On Monday, the BJP leader and Supreme Court advocate Ashwini Upadhyay had said, "#UniteIndiaMovement has been launched to repeal Colonial Laws and Make Uniform Laws Programme was over at 12:15. The purported video was tweeted in the evening by some miscreants to malign & defame this noble cause".
It is known that a rally was organized at Jantar Mantar by the Supreme Court advocate on Sunday, despite permission being denied by the Delhi Police. Hundreds of people took part in the rally and videos of the demonstration went viral, wherein several objectionable slogans against a religious community were allegedly made. It is also learnt that the program was organized under the Bharat Jodo Movement, and was held in a bid to demand the abolition of some laws of the British era. It was during this rally that people were heard raising objectionable slogans.
Due to the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) Act in place (mass gathering in lieu of Covid19 is not allowed), permission for the demonstration was not given, police had said, adding they thought only 50 people would attend the event. Senior officials of the New Delhi District Police say that the viral video is being currently investigated.
