Srinagar:Three Hizbul Mujahideen terrorists including a top commander were killed in an encounter with security forces in Anantnag district of Jammu and Kashmir on Friday, police said. Based on specific inputs about the presence of terrorists in the Srichand Top forest area in Pahalgam, Anantnag, security forces launched a cordon and search operation there, a police official said.

He said the search operation turned into an encounter after the hiding terrorists fired at the security forces. In retaliation, three terrorists were killed, the official said. Talking to ETV Bharat, a senior police officer said, "57-year-old Muhammad Ashraf Khan alias Moulvi has been killed during a gunfight with a joint team of Army, police and paramilitary CRPF at Sirchand Top forest area of Pahalgam in Anantnag district. He further said, "three militants have been killed so far. They have been identified as Ashraf Moulvi, Roshan Zameer and Rafiq Ahmad." According to the officer, Moulvi's name had also figured among the top probables for the Hizbul Mujahideen's command in Kashmir after Riyaz Naikoo was killed on May 6, 2020, by security forces.

However, Saifullah was chosen instead and after his killing, Zubair Wani took the reins of Hizb. Molvi was a resident of Anantnag and was associated with Hizb since 2013.
