IS suspect prisoner beaten to chant Jai Sriram

An IS suspect Rashid Zafar accused of planning terror attack across the nation in 2018 has claimed that he was beaten and forced to chant Jai Shri Ram by his jail inmates.

New Delhi: An IS suspect, accused of the mastermind of numerous terror attacks across the country has filed a petition at Delhi's Patiala House alleging that he was beaten up by jail inmates for chanting Jai Shri Ram. The accused Rashid Zafar was arrested in 2018.

Zafar's lawyer MS Khan said Zafar made an accusation during a telephonic conversation with his father. He added that Zafar was forced to chant Jai Shri Ram and was assaulted.

The incident happened yesterday afternoon. It has been stated Rashid has gone to a dispensary but while returning he was allegedly indulging in the fight with other inmates following which he was forced to chant "Jai Sri Ram".

Zafar was arrested by the NIA in December 2018 in collaboration with the Special Cell of Delhi Police and ATS of UP Police. The NIA had raided six places in Delhi's Jaffrabad Seelampur and UP's Amroha, two each in Lucknow, Hapur and Meerut.

All these suspects have linked with Harkat-ul-Harb-e-Islam. A rocket launcher, 12 pistols and 25 kg of explosives were recovered from them.

Rashid has been lodged in Delhi's Tihar jail--Asia's biggest jails and it is one of the safest jails in the country-- since 2018.
