Chitradurga (Karnataka): The first case of cutaneous mucormycosis has been reported in a 50-year-old patient in the Chitradurga district of Karnataka.

Cutaneous mucormycosis is an emerging fungal infection caused by opportunistic fungi of the phylum Glomeromycota. It is frequent in poorly controlled diabetic patients and individuals with immunosuppression.

According to a team of doctors, it is the first skin black fungus case in India. The patient has recovered from Covid-19 a month ago and has comorbidity of diabetes, and now black fungus has appeared near his right ear.

The fungus has been discovered in the Karnataka ENT and Research Center of Chitradurga.

"ENT Specialist Prahlad has successfully cleared the area where the black fungus had appeared and surgically treated and completed the first stage surgery. They are now preparing for the second stage of surgery," an official said.
