India sends relief material to flood affected families in Nepal

Lakhs of people living along the Nepal-Bihar border have been affected due to the rise in the water level of the Ganges and its tributaries, the Government of India, on Friday, handed over a consignment of disaster relief material to Nepal for flood-affected families.

Patna (Bihar): India on Friday handed over a consignment of disaster relief material to Nepal for flood-affected families as the lives of lakhs of people along the Nepal-Bihar border have been affected due to the rise in the water level of the Ganges and its tributaries. On behalf of the Government of India, Commandant Vijay Sinha of the 9th Battalion NDRF Headquarters located in Bihta, adjacent to the capital Patna handed over the material to Nepal authorities.

“Nepal has always been our friendly nation. This relief material is being sent to the people of Nepal to show our commitment to help Nepal currently affected by floods and to stand firm with Nepal in difficult times. It will be handed over to Nepal on the Indo-Nepal border. On the initiative and guidelines of the Government of India, NDRF has sent 28 trucks full of family ridge tents, plastic seats, synthetic sleeping mats etc. to Nepal," Vijay Sinha, Commandant, 9th Battalion NDRF.

The relief material includes tents and plastic sheets, sleeping mats for distribution to flood-affected families.

Meanwhile, the flood situation in Bihar remained grim with over 83.62 lakh people across 16 districts were affected. An official of the Disaster Management Department said that apart from Patna, Muzaffarpur, Darbhanga, Khagaria, Saharsa, Vaishali, Bhojpur, Lakhisarai, Bhagalpur, Saran, Buxar, Begusarai, Katihar, Munger, Samastipur and Purnia districts are affected by the floods. 14 teams of NDRF and 12 teams of SDRF have been deployed for rescue work in these districts.

According to the department, more than 2,20,000 polythene sheets and more than 1, 04,000 dry ration pockets have been distributed. Apart from this, assessment of crop damage is being done in all the districts. After the assessment, compensation will be given to the farmers.

Also, 68 relief camps and 621 community kitchens are being operated in the affected areas. So far, a total of Rs 134.34 crore has been distributed to 2,23,899 flood-affected families as ex-gratia relief (GR) at the rate of Rs 6,000 per family.
