New Delhi:India and Pakistan on Saturday exchanged through diplomatic channels simultaneously at New Delhi and Islamabad the lists of civilian prisoners and fishermen in their custody. Under the provisions of the 2008 Agreement on Consular Access, such lists are exchanged every year on January 1 and July 1, the Ministry of External Affairs said.
India has shared lists of 343 civilian prisoners and 74 fishermen in its custody, who are Pakistani or believed to be Pakistani. Similarly, Pakistan has shared lists of 42 civilian prisoners and 266 fishermen in its custody, who are Indian or believed to be Indian.
The government has called for early release and repatriation of civilian prisoners, missing Indian defence personnel, and fishermen, along with their boats, from Pakistan's custody. In this context, Pakistan was asked to expedite the release and repatriation of 254 Indian fishermen and four Indian civilian prisoners, who have completed their resentences, Pakistan has been asked to provide immediate consular access to another 12 fishermen and 14 civilian prisoners in Pakistan's custody, who are believed to be Indians.
