New Delhi: As Congress' General Secretary in-charge KC Venugopal has announced, on Friday, that the party will have it's 'elected' President by June 2021, the electoral process will begin in the month of May. However, this time, there won't be any need to convene the All India Congress Committee Plenary Session.

According to the Congress constitution, a party President is being appointed for a five-year term. In 2017, Rahul Gandhi took over the post of Congress President but he resigned in 2019 after the party lost General Elections. Since then, Sonia Gandhi has been interim president of the party. Therefore, the current elections will be held for just 2 years as the term would end in 2022.

"These elections would be for an interim term of 2 years. Therefore, no need to convene a plenary session for that," said a Congress functionary.

In such a scenario, the electoral college would be All India Congress Committee delegates, which are around 1400-1500 in number. Then AICC delegates would decide on elections of CWC members or giving the authority to party President to constitute the body.

While in case of appointing Congress President for the full term of 5 years, the Pradesh Congress Committee delegates vote in the polls during the Plenary session. To contest elections for the post of Congress Chief, one has to submit a nomination in which approval from 10 AICC delegates is required, said a Congress functionary.

In CWC, 12 members get directly nominated by the party President, while elections will be held for 11 posts. As per the constitution, 4 seats are reserved for women candidates and 2 for SC/ST category.
