Rajnandgaon: In what can be described as an insult to the dead, a garbage van was used to ferry bodies of Covid patients in Dongargaon block of Rajnandgaon in Chattisgarh.

On Wednesday, three deaths due to COVID was reported from the area. Chief Medical Officer B R Tiwari has ordered a probe after the incident was reported in the media. He also added that initially the vehicle was used to lift garbage but now it has been used for making public announcements.

Zerwahi resident Budhiyarin Bai, Asra resident Premlata and Nirmala Bai died during treatment at a Covid Care centre. The bodies were supposed to be ferried as per the protocol to the crematorium. But panchayat officials were negligent and ferried the bodies in a garbage van said the relatives of the deceased.

When Block Medical Officer Ragini Chandre was asked about the incident, he said that the responsibility of carrying bodies has been entrusted with the Nagar Panchayat. He said that he was unaware of the vehicle used for ferrying bodies.
