Gangotri Highway closed due to heavy rain, landslide in Uttarkashi

Uttarkashi (Uttarakhand):The Gangotri Highway in Uttarkashi district has been blocked due to debris falling from the hill near Silkyara. Incessant rainfall in the region had triggered landslides in recent days. A team of the Border Roads Organisation has already reached the spot and efforts are on to open up the highway for vehicular traffic.

According to the forecast by the Meteorological Center Dehradun, there is a possibility of heavy rainfall at isolated places in Nainital, Champawat, Pithoragarh, Bageshwar and Pauri districts of the state on Monday. In lieu of this, the Indian Meteorological Department has already issued a yellow alert in these districts.

On the other hand, due to an increase in the water level of Tehri Lake, around 10 meters of the road in Chinyalisaur town of the district got submerged.

Heavy rainfall in the past few days has also led to the reconstruction work of Kedarnath Dham located in Rudraprayag district being stalled. Meanwhile, the first snowfall of the season has also been recorded in the higher altitudes of the Himalayan region.
