FIR against ex Mumbai Commissioner Param Bir Singh on extortion charges

A case of extortion has been registered against former Mumbai Police Commissioner Param Bir Singh at Marine Drive police station.

Mumbai: A case of extortion has been registered against former Mumbai Police Commissioner Param Bir Singh at Marine Drive police station. A total of eight people have been named in the FIR including six policemen. Two civilians have been arrested till now by police acting on the complaint filed by a businessman.

Reports said the Maharastra Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) has been asked by the state government to initiate a probe into the allegations against Singh for demanding Rs 2 crore to reappoint Anup Dange, a police officer whom Singh had suspended during his tenure. Dange alleged that a person claiming to be Singh's relative approached him with the deal. In the complaint, Dange claimed that Singh tried to protect some miscreants during the latter's tenure as the Director-General of the ACB.

After getting entangled in the Antilia bomb scare case, Singh was transferred from the post of Mumbai police chief in March 2021. In addition, another FIR is registered and a probe is underway over his alleged misconduct during his tenure as the police commissioner of Thane.

Central agencies, including the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), have recorded his statement in the alleged corruption and money laundering case against former Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh.
