Farmers refuse to budge, next round of talks on December 9

The farmers, who have been protesting against the farm laws for the straight tenth day, have threatened to intensify their protests if their demands are not met. The talks between the farmers and the central government remained inconclusive even today and the next round of talks is scheduled on December 9.

New Delhi:As the fifth round of talks between the protesting farmers and the Centre failed to reach a breakthrough, farmers have agreed to the sixth round of talks. However, the government sought more time for consultation on-farm laws and the next meeting is scheduled on December 9. The farmers have also called for Bharat Bandh on December 8.

The farmers have threatened to intensify their agitation if the government does not roll back the agri-sector laws. The farmers said they have made arrangements to camp at Delhi borders for at least a year.

The government has requested the farmers to give up their protest and has accused the opposition parties of misleading the farmers.

Yesterday, Agriculture minister Narendra Singh Tomar, Home Minister Amit Shah, Railway Minister Piyush Goyal held a high-level meeting before commencing their talks with the farmers. The central government has reiterated that there will be no change to the Minimum Support Price (MSP) scheme and the Agricultural Produce Market Committee (APMC).

Tomar said that farmers should give up the protests as a number of elderly people and children are also a part to it and as they have to face the chilling cold weather and COVID-19 pandemic.

The government had described the talks with farmers as 'fruitful' but the farmers have clearly stated that they want the government to repeal the farm laws.

The pressure is mounting on the government as some of the BJP leaders have shown support to the farmers. The allies of NDA like RLP, JJP are also thinking to review their ties with the BJP if the government fails to find a quick solution.

BJP's oldest ally Akali Dal had snapped ties with the saffron party after the contentious farm bills were tabled in the Parliament. Sources said that government is willing to amend some provisions of the new farm laws.
